Mixed views of Timbuktu
Welcome to Timbuktu!"Well it’s been just over two weeks since we last wrote, and as we sit here at a private beach resort relaxing and listening to the crashing of the waves we thought we had better drop you a line.

When we last left you, we had just arrived in Timbuktu. Now one cannot even start to describe this place. However, it was also a place which caused great debate on the bus - with some people loving the place and others disliking it completely. There are certainly things that go on in the town that left us all baffled - I won't spoil the suprise here! The Lonely Planet probably described it best; "mysterious". As one of those places that we've all heard about growing up, everybody should experience it for themselves to form their own opinion.

We had a great Christmas overall though. Some took romantic camel rides through the desert while others hits the clubs. However, one of the highlights had to be the choccy biscuits that we'd hidden from the others until now - a heavenly taste of home!

A hair-raising time in Burkina Faso
From Timbuktu we made our way to Burkina Faso, stopping at Djenne which boasts the world's largest mud brick structure. New Years was spent in Burkina Faso where we were kindly invited to stay at Guillime's place, a French guy we met in Mali. Once again, clubbing for some and music in the park for others.

Hair today, gone tomorrow...Before we had arrived in Burkina Faso, we had decided that we would stop at an orphanage whilst we were there. Loads of ideas had flown around as to how we were going to raise as much money as we could to donate upon arrival. So on New Years Eve, Thoby came up with the idea of auctioning his head! The highest bidder got to do anything to Thoby’s head from the neck up, but no touching the eyebrows... As he had a reasonable beard and long hair, plenty of bids were made!

The deal was that he was to wear this cut for a week with all proceeds going to the orphanage. The bidding started and remained stable for a couple of hours with Grant at £20 before various groups starting pooling together and teaming up. By late evening, a group of us owned his head for £280! The next day we took our donation along to the orphanage and spent a couple of hours with them. They were delighted with the proceeds and we were just happy to help

Chilling out and enjoying African wildlifeEntering the promised land...
We arrived at the promised land; Ghana where English is the spoken language. It was also Pong's birthday which we celebrated with a trip to Mole National Park. Then onto Kumasi for a couple of nights and some time spent visiting one of Africa’s biggest markets. When we were here, the sky’s opened up and thundered down on us, which was a nice surprise as it cooled the temperatures down. We haven't seen rain since Morocco.

From Kumasi to Accra, where we lodged our visas for Nigeria. Our home for the next couple of nights was Ryan's Irish pub, where we enjoyed beers on tap! Then we head onwards to the coast where we wait for our visas. Sand, sun, boogy boards, Kakum National Park, a well-deserved truck clean, and Big Millies. This is the life..."
